the manner in which dogs are bred and reared has far-reaching effects not only on individual dogs but on whole populations of dogs. Their physical characteristics (colour, size, shape) are largely established by their inherited genetic material and, to some extent, by their upbringing. Both specific inherited diseases and conformation are inherited and so the selection of genetically healthy breeding stock is essential. The temperament of dogs also has a genetic component, but is also strongly influenced by early environment and therefore how dogs are treated in the first weeks of their lives has a profound effect on behavior throughout life. These issues are as relevant for mixed-breed, cross-bred or so-called designer dogs as they are for pedigree dogs and so this Breeding Standard applies to all and every type of dog.
